Semicolon

How to use the semicolon in English writing
We use a semicolon to separate two independent ideas (two independent clauses), provided the two sentences are related. When listing complex ideas or phrases that already contain commas, a semicolon is a suitable separator. A semicolon does the job of a comma but carries more meaning; it can also do the job of a colon, but is more flexible to use.
When joining two or more ideas in a sentence that are equal to each other:

The universe has always called to human beings; there could be no more final frontier than space.

When joining two independent clauses linked by a conjunctive adverb or a transitional phrase:

Sam thought David was inviting him to the picnic to enjoy a nice day out; as it turned out, David was planning a surprise birthday party.
